Technical Specs. The MI6 agent and the senior army officer were the worst characters I've seen on TV in ages. I'm all for inclusiveness, but a lesbian priest whose partner is an illegal Asian immigrant visa signed by a labour politician is too much for me.

With Carey Mulligan and John Simm starring I thought it must be quality. They must have been paid a quality fee. Come on BBC, get some decent writers!

Writing for the theatre, an author has to make great use of dialogue; they lack access to the inner monologue that a writer of fiction can call upon, or the camera and its access to varied surroundings of someone writing for TV or cinema.

Hare has his own trademark style of dialogue; and he retains it even when television is his medium. So one thing one doesn't get is naturalistic dialogue.

Instead, his characters talk in short, confident sentences, that are non-expository; or at least, the words tell us something about the overall moof of the moment, but can feel almost deliberately obfuscatory in terms of plot.

But when it comes to plot, Hare gets one thing right that many authors of detective stories do not: a situation that intially appears bizarrely byzantine to its investigators is in fact less complex than it seemed; the complexity a by-product of what they don't know.

There's a relatively simple story at the heart of the mystery, unlike so many stories, where an endless sequence of preposterous developments are required to make sense of it all.

So the writing is good. The underlying theme is thought-provoking too; the responsibility of those of us who live in the relatively comfortable world to those who do not.

Hare clearly has strong opinions on this question; but his treatment, though partisan, is fair, and underpins rather than smothering the story.

I normally look to them for better-than-average programming, but the quality of their output really seems to be going downhill.

This latest offering is another depressing example. Good actors and nice cinematography that much seems to be reliable but awful, awful writing.

The characters here are some of the most absurd caricatures I've ever seen. The dialogue, mostly delivered at break-neck speed, is ridiculously unnatural - almost laughable.

And the messaging is so on-the-nose, so utterly lacking in subtlety, that it feels more like propaganda than drama. The show attempts to deal with serious issues, but ends up making a mockery of them with such ridiculous, ham-fisted treatment.

Really disappointing. And a waste of a high-quality cast. I don't understand all the low reviews. I found this series to be very riveting.

It was multi-layered with characters stories intertwined. I was sorry when it was over. This series was give a great build-up, with some big names, but it really did not live up to the billing.

The actors, for the most part, didn't really seem to know what was going on, and the main character, the detective seemed like a bit of an afterthought, as though her part had been bolted on to try and give coherence to a string on more or less connected political rants.

I think they were doing their best, but by the end, some, at least, seemed to be losing the will to live. There were so many political and moralistic messages that they completely confused any semblance of a plot almost out of existence.

For example, Billie Piper did her best, but what was her character even there for? Similarly, there were a number of other characters who seemed to be there simply to get some message over, rather than further the plot, such as it was.

The MP character was a triumph of sorts, as he was one of the least likeable creations seen in drama for a long time. Physically unappealing, he was whiny and sulky, petulant and flouncy by turns.

If this is an accurate example of our MPs, heaven help us. Even though I did watch all of it, I have only a vague idea of what it was meant to be about.

Nice photography, though. Tweekums 6 March Populair comments 0. More comments. Suggestions 2 votes. TV Guide Choose per series where you want be kept informed of.

All Critics 40 Top Critics 17 Fresh 31 Rotten 9. This could be a fruitful exercise, if tackled with care, and a willingness to find nuance in a subject that's deeply fraught.

But Hare, whose work has always had a polemicist strain, paints only in black and white. By centering this story around all of these totemic societal institutions, Collateral is taking a broad view of all of these key political, legal, and religious pillars, which are subject to the individuals who comprise them.

With a set-up this tantalising, what a shame it would be if Collateral's script doesn't settle down. I really, really hope that, down the line, the plot demands she vault over a five-metre wall to bag the baddie.

That would get the full five stars. It's a smart and solid miniseries, particularly for those who don't already watch a lot of bleak British detective shows and can still be surprised by how everything in London seems connected.

The show takes its subject matter seriously to be sure, but there's still time for Kip to have a rat-a-tat conversation with her partner about her pole vaulting days, or for characters to chat about something other than the exposition at hand.

All these threads start to pull together and the convoluted story becomes clearer. That's not to say that the threads wrap up neatly into a little bow - but there is a satisfying ending, of sorts.

Mulligan provides the backbone for a series that could easily have gone awry. Yet Hare's drama is perfectly suited to give her a starring vehicle.
